Target killing throws Rangamati people into panic

Fear and anxiety haunt the people living in Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) as the incidents of target killing is on the rise in the region.

On Wednesday, armed assailants stormed the office of Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) in Rangamati district and shot a Union Parishad (UP) member to death in broad daylight.

The deceased was identified as Samar Bijoy Chakma, 38, a member of ward-1 of Rupkar union parishad in the upazila.

In this regard, UP Member Binoy Chakma filed a case with Baghaichhari Police Station accusing 10 identified persons and eight unidentified men, said Officer-in-Charge of Baghaichhari Police Station Anwar Hossain Khan.

Meanwhile, the body of Bijoy Chakma was handed over to his family after autopsy.

Officer-in-Charge of Baghaichhari Police Station Anwar Hossain Khan said a group of miscreants entered the UNO office at around 12:45pm and shot the UP member.

On information, police rushed to the spot and found Bijoy's body there, he said.

However, the assailants managed to flee the scene by several motorcycles, the OC said.

Bijoy was talking to an official about a project when three people were standing outside the room and peeking inside. One of them entered the room and shot Bijoy in the chest, police said.

“The miscreants arrived on motorbikes. They fled the scene shortly after the shooting,” UNO Shariful Islam said.

Baghaichhari upazila parishad Chairman Sudarshan Chakma, who is also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity or PCJSS (MN Larma faction), blamed the JSS (Santu Larma faction) faction for the incident.

The incident has sparked widespread panic among people.

On 22 February last year, Unidentified criminals shot dead Ba Chaw Nu Marma, 50, president of ward unit AL at Jamchhari area under Bandarban Sadar upazila. It was alleged that people of JSS (Santu Larma faction) killed the AL leader.

On April 1, 2020, Asupru Marma, vice-chairman of Ward No-3 under Chitmorom UP, shot to death by terrorists in Kaptai Upazila of Rangamati.

On May 3 in 2018, Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, 55, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of the upazila parishad complex.

Sources said tribal groups of CHT are locked into clashes and murder for establishing supremacy in the area over illegal collections of tolls in their respective areas.
