Week-long Mother Language Fest underway at GUB

A week-long virtual Mother Language Fest 2021 began on Saturday organised by the Language Center of Green University of Bangladesh (GUB).

Serajum Munira, director of the Language Center, also assistant professor of English department of GUB, delivered the welcome speech at the inaugural ceremony while Prof Dr Md Abdur Razzaque, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Green University, was present as the chief guest and Prof Dr Milton Biswas, Department of Bangla of Jagannath University, graced the event as the guest of honour. Tanzia Mobarak, lecturer of Department of English, also coordinator of Mother Language Fest, hosted the inaugural ceremony.

In the day, the first event of the fest titled ‘Green Er Nanavashi Shikkharthider Uposthapona’ or ‘Speech by GUB Students of Various Ethno-linguistic Background’ was held.  Here, the students presented Bangla, Chakma, Hajong, Marma, and Tripura linguistic heritage respectively both in their mother tongues and its translation for the audiences.

Later, special guest Dinalo Chakma, assistant professor of Jessore Science and Technology University, shared reflections on the multilingual event and his experiences of being a Chakma native speaker in Bangladeshi academia.  Next, a competition on Bangladeshi regional dialects themed ‘Amar Jela-e Shera’ took place. Students from GUB participated in the event. The program came to an end with cultural performances.
