Karnaphuli Boat Tragedy

CHATTOGRAM: Bodies of three more victims were recovered on Thursday and Friday, days after two boats capsized in the Karnaphuli river.

The deceased were identified as Nahiyan Al Faruk, 22, of Karnaphuli upazila in Chattogram district, and Abul Kashem, 50, and Saidul Karim, 60, of Kutubdia Island in Cox’s Bazar district.

Mentionable, the victims went missing after two boats capsized in Karnaphuli River on Monday and Tuesday.

Sources said that locals found body of Nahiyan at the Ghat No 11 area at around 6:00am on Friday.

Officer-in-charge ABM Mizanur Rahman of Sadarghat river police station said on receiving information they recovered the body of Abul Kashem from Ghat No 15 area on Thursday.

The body was handed over to the family, he said.

Lt Commander Habibur Rahman, staff officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard East Zone, said they recovered the missing body of Saidul on Thursday and handed it over to the family.

Mentionable, Nahiyan went missing on Tuesday while a wooden engine-driven boat capsized in the Karnaphuli while crossing the river with passengers from Patenga Ghat No.12.    

On the other hand, Abul Kashem and Saidul Karim went missing on Monday when another wooden engine-driven boat was capsized in the river while it was going to Kutubdia from Khatungonj with goods.

With this, four passengers have died and two others were injured in the boat accidents.
