Elderly man burnt alive in Ctg slum fire

CHATTOGRAM: A paralyzed septuagenarian was killed and six dwelling houses were gutted in a devastating fire in the city's Halishahar area on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Md Nowshad, 80.

Sources in the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) department, Chattogram said a fire broke out at Rail Beat Basti in the area under EPZ Police Station at around 4:00am.

It spread fast engulfing other adjoining structures within a very short time.

Six slum houses containing around 50 rooms were gutted in the fire.

The paralysed old man got trapped inside a house and burned to death in the fire, they said.

FSCD Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Newton Das         

said on receiving information, nine fire fighting units rushed to the spot and doused the fire around 7:30am.

Damages in the fire were estimated at Tk 1.2 million, he said.
