Books are our best friends. They help broaden our perspective towards life. They help make us better persons. So, there is no doubt that books are our best friends. And this is going on for decades together. During our bygone days, reading books was a popular practice all over. Not to speak of big cities, in small towns too people used to throng libraries in their localities to have a glimpse of books. As times passed by, many things have changed. Books are no more that attractive to many persons – young or old.

Presently, mobile phone, computer, laptop, internet and many other devices are easily accessible to people. With the help of the devices, they can easily get any sort of information from anywhere and at anytime. So, libraries have virtually lost appeal to them. Most of the libraries have now worn a deserted look. A handful of readers now visit libraries to acquire knowledge. Introduction of e-books, shabby condition of libraries and a busy life style are the major reasons behind the sorry state of the ‘hubs of knowledge.’ Steps are sought to renovate the libraries.

Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed, the founder chairman of ‘Biswa Sahitya Kendra,’ has rightly stated that libraries would get a new life when we would be able to develop reading habits and increase the number of avid readers. Emulating the example of ‘Biswa Sahitya Kendra,’ books should be taken to the doorsteps of youths to create reading habits among them. Time has come to wage a movement for strengthening reading habits in society.

Books are our true friends as they always give us something, but in return they do not demand anything from us. The world is full of sorrow. It lacks joy and happiness to a great extent. In such a situation, people find solace in the company of books. Good books help cheer-up people’s mood and soothe their soul in bad times. So, instead of indulging solely in electronic devices, members of the new generation should concentrate themselves in reading good books. A good book can work wonders for the peace of mind which is a pre-requisite for making the world a better abode for all.
