Four lives lost on roads

At least four people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in Madaripur and Pabna on Friday.

In Madaripur, two passengers were killed and three others critically injured after an ambulance fell into a roadside ditch in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur at noon.

The deceased are Khadiza Begum, 50, wife of Anwar Hossain from Purba Bamura village in Uzirpur upazila of Barisal, and Mehedi Hossain, 17, son of Jalal Mia from the same village.

According to locals, the accident took place at around 12:00pm when Khadiza Begum and her family were going to Dhaka for treatment by the ambulance.

The vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a roadside ditch in Kutubpur area after its driver lost control over the steering, leaving the duo dead on the spot.

Shibchar Highway Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Sohrab Ahmed Majumdar said, "On receiving information, a police team visited the spot.

The injured were taken to Panchar Royal Hospital in the upazila.

In another incident, two people were killed and three others injured when a truck hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Pabna-Sujanagar road in Pabna Sadar upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Jhontu Kundu, 60, and Arifa Khatun, 40.

Sub-inspector Md Shafiul Alam, also in-charge of Dublia Police Camp said, a Sujanagar-bound coal-laden truck hit the three-wheeler coming from the opposite side at around 8:30am, leaving both the auto-rickshaw passengers dead on the spot.

Critically injured the other passengers of the auto-rickshaw were rushed to Pabna General Hospital, he added.

Police seized the truck, but the driver and helper managed to flee.

The police official also said that vehicular movement on Pabna-Sujanagar road remained halted for around one hour after the accident.
