Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of the opposition BNP, celebrated its 42nd founding anniversary on Friday through various programmes across the country.
To mark the day, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with leaders and activists of the student organisation paid tribute to party founder Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital at 12 noon.After placing wreathes at Zia’s grave, Mirza Fakhrul told reporters that “We hope the country will get rid of coronavirus and ‘autocracy’ in the year 2021.”
“We took fresh vow to free BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail and ‘restore democracy’ in the country”, added the BNP secretary general.
He also urged the political parties to forge a greater unity to ensure the fall of the incumbent Awami League government through creating a mass upsurge.
Earlier, the Chhatra Dal leaders and activists brought out procession and gathered at the Zia’s grave premises since around 11am on the day. To mark the day, the associate student organization of BNP also arranged a virtual discussion in the afternoon. BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman joined the programme as chief guest.
In 1992, the Chhatra Dal Committee was formed by direct vote of the councilors. Ruhul Kabir Rizvi became the president and M Ilias Ali became the general secretary. The first elected committee was dissolved within a few months of its formation.
After 28 years, the Chhatra Dal committee was formed again in 2019 by direct voting. Fazlur Rahman was elected the president of the Chhatra Dal and Iqbal Hossain the general secretary. This committee has been working for more than a year.The Chhatra Dal is now crippled with internal conflict as the leaders of the organization are divided into around five parts. At the same time, the Chhatra Dal also failed to forge anti-government movement as per desire of the BNP, the organization sources said.
