the 106th birth anniversary of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin was observed Tuesday. To mark the day, Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University arranged a day-long event titled ‘Zainul Utsab-2020’. The event feature placing wreath at the grave of the Shilpacharya by the Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor and faculty members, a virtual photography and art exhibition on the life and works of Zainul Abedin which was broadcast on the Fine Arts Faculty website www.fineart-du.com.
A virtual exhibition in collaboration with Artcon also held. Works by the prominent artists of the subcontinent along with the artists from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University exhibited at the exhibition.DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman placed a wreath at the grave of Shilpacharya at 10:am. DU Fine Arts Faculty Dean Prof Nisar Hossain, DU Teachers’ Association (DUTA) General Secretary Prof Md Nizamul Hoque Bhuiyan and Zainul’s son Engineer Mainul Abedin, were present there, among others.
Expressing deep respect to the eternal memory of Shilpacharya, Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said that Shilpacharya established the Dhaka Art Institute in 1948 to institutionalise the fine art education in the country.
“This art institute is now well known as the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University. Faculty of Fine Arts, the impeccable creation of Shilpacharya has been playing a vital role in the spread of fine art education not only in Bangladesh but also in the Indian subcontinent,” he said.
“Zainul Abedin illustrated various social inconsistencies, irregularities, inequalities, human misery and natural disasters through various paintings. All these efforts of Shilpacharya have brought him immortality in the art world,” Akhtaruzzaman added.
