Vandalism of Bagha Jatin’s Sculpture

JL leader among 3 arrested

Three people, including a local Jubo League leader, was arrested over vandalism of the sculpture of anti-British revolutionary leader Jatindranath Mukherjee, popularly known as Bagha Jatin, on the campus of Kaya College in Kushtia’s Kumarkhali upazila on Saturday.

The arrestees were identified as Jubo League president of Kaya union unit Anisur Rahman Anis, 35, Sabuj Hossain, 20, Hridoy Ahmed, 20.

SM Tanvir Arafat, Superintendent of Police of Kushtia, said, “Anisur and two residents of the village Sabuj and Hridoy were arrested in the morning on suspicion of vandalising the sculpture of Bagha Jatin.”

While asked about the cause of the vandalism, SP said the arrested Juba League leader had a personal conflict with the college managing committee and the college principal. Police have initially confirmed that the sculpture was vandalised due to the conflict.  

Police are conducting drive to arrest another man named Bachu, 32, as he was also involved in the vandalism, SP SM Tanvir Arafat said.

Miscreants smashed the nose and the right cheek of the sculpture on Friday.

Later, the college principal filed a case with the local police station in connection with the vandalism.

Kumarkhali upazila administration built the sculpture in his birth place on December 6, 2016.

Earlier, an under construction sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was vandalised in Kushtia on December 5.
