Convicted rapist marries victim in Rajshahi

A convicted rapist, who has been sentenced to life-term imprisonment, married the victim at Rajshahi Central Jail gate in presence of their nine-year-old son on Saturday.

The jail authorities arranged the wedding as per the order of the High Court (HC).

With the marriage, convict Dilip Khalko is going to get bail in the case.  

Subrato Kumar Bala, senior jail super of the Rajshahi Central Jail, said that the man and woman, who are Hindus, were married as per the Hindu Marriage Registration law.

A priest performed religious rituals and garlands were exchanged between them.     

Some 14 relatives of both bride and bridegroom and their nine-year-old son were present at that time, he said, adding that the jail superintendent presented a sari to the bride as a gift.

Earlier on October 23, the HC directed the superintendent of the Rajshahi Jail to arrange their marriage.

The court also ordered the jail authorities to submit a progress report within 30 days from the marriage ceremony.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after both sides agreed to the marriage during the hearing of a bail petition filed by Dilip.

Dilip had love affairs with the victim who is his relative. During their relation, they were involved in objectionable moments, making the victim pregnant in 2011. At one stage, Dilip refused to marry her. Then, she filed a case against him on October 25, 2011 with Godagari Police Station.

On January 29, 2012, charges were framed against the accused in the case. Following the trial, on June 12, 2012, a court sentenced Dilip to life-term imprisonment and a fine of Tk 50,000.
