Monir Hossain alias Golden Monir was put on 18-day remand in three cases on Sunday after he was arrested on charges of various crimes against him.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddik put Monir on 14-day remand in two cases filed under the Arms Act and the Special Powers Act.In another development, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masudur Rahman granted four-day remand for Golden Monir in a drug case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
Earlier in the day, Police Inspector Mohammad Yasin Mia produced him before the court, seeking 14 days’ remand for Monir in the Arms Act and the Special Powers Act cases.
Sub-inspector Jane Alam Dulal produced Monir before the court, seeking seven-day remand in the Narcotics Control Act case.
Earlier in the day, Rapid Action Battalion filed the cases against Golden Monir, who was arrested from his Badda residence on Saturday night on charges of possessing illegal firearms, foreign currencies and drugs.
Foreign currencies of 10 countries worth Tk 9 lakh, around 8kg gold and Tk 1.9 crore in cash were recovered from his possession during the overnight raid.
Monir, who was a salesman of a cloth shop in Gausia Market, has 200 plots in his name in Badda, Nikunja, Uttara and Keraniganj, and five luxury cars worth Tk 3 crore.He was also a vicious hundi trader and land broker. The RAB said they found his involvement in gold smuggling. Monir has allegedly amassed illegal wealth worth about Tk 1,050 crore.
Meanwhile, RAJUK Chairman Md Sayeed Noor Alam said they will investigate the RAB’s information on “200 plots” of Golden Monir.
“The information is needed for investigation. It should be looked into the information first before taking any action.”
He made the remarks while replying to a query of a journalist at the Local Government Ministry after a meeting on the Detailed Area Plan.
The RAB said they have got the information on having 200 plots in Badda, Niketon, Keraniganj, Uttara and Nikunja areas under the possession of Golden Monir.
The RAJUK chairman also said they will cancel the plots of Monir if the RAB’s information becomes true.
The RAJUK has a plan that they will conduct more drives against corruption, he added.
About the faking of the RAJUK seal, he said, “We’ll also investigate the matter. If anyone of the RAJUK is found guilty in the issue, we will take departmental action against them. Besides this, the cases in the court will take its own course.”
An RAB team arrested Monir from his house at Merul Badda and seized gold ornaments weighing 8kg, Tk 1.09 crore in cash, Tk 9 lakh in forged currencies, five SUVs, a pistol, four bullets and four litres of foreign alcohol.
