Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Tazul Islam on Wednesday said the government will not allow any development work that will cause public sufferings.

Roads are cut for different purposes and left for months without doing any work. It causes sufferings for the people, the minister said.

Different construction materials including sand, cement, rods and bricks are kept on the road and footpaths, hampering traffic and movement of pedestrians, he added.  Permission will not be given to any contractor to dig or cut road, if he is unable to do necessary repair work in the time stipulated in the work order, the minister said.

He made the remarks after handing over of street sweeper trucks at a programme at Gulshan in the capital on Wednesday.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) and Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) received the sweeper vehicles.

DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said, “We will use the truck for cleaning the roads so that the city dwellers do not find any dust in the morning.”

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said, “We want to bring our services under the automation system. The government has provided us vacuum road sweeping trucks through which we can carry out road sweeping work mechanically. I hope the government will provide automated machines for cleaning canals.”

DNCC needs 60 road sweeping machines, but it has only 14, he said.  GCC mayor Md Jahangir Alam, senior secretary of LGRD ministry Helal Uddin Ahmed and others spoke on the occasion.
