Phone theft racket busted

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested 12 members of an organised gang, which is involved in selling stolen phones after changing their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers.

A team of Dhaka Metro East Division of the CID nabbed them from various parts of the capital on Wednesday. The arrestees are Murad Khan, 23, Lablu Hasan, 20, Al Amin alias Anik, 20, Bashir Alam Shuvo, 30, Abdul Malek, 32, the owner of Mim Telecom, Tamim, 20, Shah Alam, 36, Swapan, 34, Jahangir Alam, 26, Imam Hasan, 22, Arif, 34, and Al Amin, 20.

Sheikh Md Rezaul Haider, additional deputy inspector general of the CID, disclosed this at a press conference at the CID headquarters on Thursday. The police recovered 265 stolen mobiles and nine devices with which they changed the IMEI numbers. The officer said Murad and Lablu purchased phones, Anik, Bashir and Malek changed the IMEI numbers while the rest sold them at a cheaper rate.
