Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday asked Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to be prepared for the next parliamentary election instead of issuing threat to orchestrate a fresh movement against the government.

“If you (BNP) want a change of government, get ready for the next general election,” Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, briefed reporters on contemporary issues at his Secretariat office.

About BNP’s threat of waging fresh movement to free Khaleda Zia from jail, Quader said BNP has just been talking about movement for the last ten years, but in reality they could not even take out a protest procession with 500 people.

“How can they hide that failure? The people have also witnessed what the ability of the party is,” he said.

He said no such situation exists now, which could give rise to a movement and BNP is not ready either.

Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina showed generosity by extending the suspension of Khaleda Zia’s jail sentence for six more months considering her age.

But it is not the outcome of BNP’s any movement; rather it is Sheikh Hasina’s greatness and her humanitarian approach, he added.

The AL general secretary said, “If BNP leaders stay inside air-conditioned rooms after calling for a movement, how the party men could wage the movement?”

Talking about the coronavirus situation, the minister said according to experts, the country may witness a second wave of coronavirus outbreak in the upcoming winter and therefore, everyone should be on high alert.

He said many countries have already witnessed the second wave while neighboring India is now reporting 90,000 to 100,000 positive cases on a daily basis.

Under the circumstances, there is no way to neglect it, he said, urging everyone to wear facemasks mandatorily and stick to health guidelines properly.

“A little bit of negligence can put our life at risk. We’ll have to keep moving the wheel of our life following health guidelines,” Quader added.
