RAB nabs Mayur-2 master

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the master of ‘Mayour-2’ launch from South Keraniganj early Monday in connection with Buriganga launch capsize that claimed lives of 34 people.

The arrested was identified as Abul Bashar Molla, 57.

Company Commander (CO) of RAB-10 Md Kaiyumuzzaman Khan said a team of the elite force conducted a drive in Hasnabad area of South Keraniganj at around 1.00am and arrested Abul Bashar.

“Bashar went into hiding in his native village in Magura soon after the incident. The following day, he went to Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur district. After staying there for two days, Bashar went to his brother-in-law’s house in Boalmari upazila of the district,” the CO said.

The RAB CO said Bashar returned to Dhaka to change his location again, and was finally caught by RAB.

On June 29, at least 34 passengers drowned when Mayour -2 launch smashed Morning Bird launch causing the vessel to sink in Buriganga river near Sadarghat launch terminal in the capital.

On June 30, Sub-inspector of Sadarghat River Police Station Shamsul Alam filed a case with Keraniganj Dakkhin Police Station accusing seven people, including owner of the Mayour -2-launch Mosaddek Hanif Swad, 33. Bashar is the second accused in the case.

The six other accused in the case are— Swad’s employee Abul Bashar Molla, 57, launch master Jakir Hossain, 54, engine driver Shipon Hawlader, 45, driver Shakil Hasan, 28, Sukani Nasir Mridha, 40, and Ridoy, 24.
