Shun politics of complaints

While the whole world is fighting the Coronavirus, the major political parties in Bangladesh are still engaged in almost daily verbal battles of never ending one-upmanship, witnessed by all. This tiresome battle has been going on for a long time. Since the Awami League (AL) government led by Sheikh Hasina came into power in 2009, the country has progressed at a speed never seen before. But in the eyes of the opposition party, nothing done by the ruling party is considered to be worthwhile.

Democracy presupposes a vibrant opposition which helps the country by constructive criticism of policies and actions of the government. But if opposition parties are bent on criticising the government just for the sake of criticism, it saps the energy of both the government and the opposition, benefiting neither. Rather, the political bickering spoils the image of the political parties and politicians of both sides in the eyes of the public.

Unfortunately for us, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has not stopped their complaints against the government even when our country is reeling under a severe Covid-19 situation along with the rest of the world. Anyone having the slightest bit of patriotism can feel that this is hardly the time to think of petty politics. Instead, it is the time for all to fight against Covid-19 unitedly.

Stop the politics of complaints and come forward to work for the country’s betterment now and at all times, irrespective of political leanings. The purpose of politics must be to serve the people and the country, not to pull down the opponent, politically. This is the best time to change ourselves now, when the worst pandemic has hit our world, as we do not know who will be the next victim of the deadly virus. For now at least, let us be rational and fair and come forward to help reduce the sufferings of the people leaving traditional politics aside.

A congenial political environment can help our beloved Bangladesh achieve greater prosperity and development within a shorter time than expected. Engaging in healthy politics for the welfare of the people can transform Bangladesh into the proverbial Utopia of our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s dream.
