Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday slammed secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for his recent comment on election commission’s initiative to amend the Political Party Registration Act.
“Countrymen felt disappointed over Mirza Fakhrul’s ill-motivated and conspiratorial statement. No responsible person of a political party can make such remark if he has respect on sovereignty and the constitution,” he said.Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, made the statement in a press release signed by AL office secretary Biplab Barua.
On Thursday, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, in a webinar, that Election Commission has taken a move to amend the Political Party Registration Act to help AL hang onto power and pave the way for it to repeatedly returning to power.
Terming Fakhrul’s comment as ill-motivated and conspiratorial, Obaidul Quader said, “Such indecent remark violating political etiquette has deeply disappointed the countrymen.”
About the upcoming by-elections to Bogura and Jasshore, Quader said they have nothing to do as holding election is a jurisdiction of EC, the press release added.
“The EC has compelled to go for by-elections due to constitutional obligations, it is their constitutional responsibility and duty,” he said.
Referring to implementation of inducting 33 per cent women in political parties, Quader said the amendment was proposed to give a realistic time frame for the political parties to implement the provision.“Awami League is ready to implement this provision in every possible way,” he said. Mentioning that election was held in Korea, Singapore, Croatia and France, he said political parties have to realise that elections were held in many countries despite coronavirus pandemic due to constitutional obligation.
