‘Make ward council focal point of dev’

Urban planners in a programme said ward council should be made the focal point of any development in a city corporation to raise the participation of the citizens in the decision making process.

“In local government, the focal point of every development should be the ward council so that mass people can participate and grow interest in the development process,” they said.

The speakers made the demands while presenting citizens manifesto for the upcoming two city corporations elections scheduled to be held on February 1.

Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) arranged the press conference at its Banglamotor office in the capital on Thursday.   Speaking at the conference, general secretary of BIP Adil Mohammed Khan said, “if ward council is made the focal point of all development activities then residents have better connection with ward councilor and his office.”  “We often talk about people’s participation and awareness in the mosquito control, cleanliness and solving water logging process but it cannot be possible without communicating them,” he said.

Demanding building up a ward complex, Adil said, “For ensuing civic services in a better and coordinated way, it is important to build a ward complex from where services can be accessed to including health, birth, death certificates, gas, water and electricity.”

BIP president Akthar Mahmud said, “Leaders like former mayor Anisul Islam can make a huge in the city to make it inclusive.
