A group of students of Dhaka University (DU) demonstrated on the campus on Thursday demanding expulsion and punishment for those who allegedly beaten up four students of the university at Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall on Tuesday night.

Around 50 students of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management of the university joined Mukimul Haque Chowdhury, one of the victims and a student of the department, in the morning as he began a sit-in in front of Raju Memorial Sculpture since Wednesday afternoon demanding justice.

They formed a human chain in front of the Raju Sculpture around 11:30am, demanding expulsion and strict punishment for the alleged Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men. They also brought out a procession on the campus.

Mukim, who was staging the sit-in programme, said the university authorities still do not take any action against the culprits. “I want justice and expulsion of those who tortured me,” he said.

Meanwhile, Santrash Birodhi Chhatra Oikya, a newly formed students’ platform at the university, brought out a protest procession on the campus around 1:30pm, demanding justice for the tortured students. They also demanded the resignation of DU Proctor for his frequent failure to protect the students and to ensure a safe campus.

Earlier on Tuesday night, some leaders and activists of DU’s Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall tortured four students, including Mukim, for nearly three hours suspecting them as Shibir activists. Later, they handed the four students to Shahbagh police around 3:30am through a DU Proctorial team. Shahbagh police released them later.
