ADB to provide $540m for human resources development

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide $540 million as concessional loans to help build skilled human resource in the country’s tertiary education sector.

Sungsup Roy, Director, Human and Social Development Division of ADB came up with the information when a-six member ADB delegation led by Sungsup Roy called on University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr. Kazi Shahidullah at UGC on Tuesday.

Roy said, “ADB will provide $100 million for human resource development in the field of computer and software engineering, $150 million in advance agriculture, $190 million for Digital University development and $100 million for garment and textile innovations.”

He further said the UGC’s supervision role is very much important in handling these projects. “For this, the DPP needs to be finalised soon. Strong leadership and necessary support from UGC are essential to push the ADB initiatives,” he added.

Prof Shahidullah said successful implementation of the project will play a significant role in human resource development, employment generation, ICT capacity building at universities.

UGC Members Prof Dr Dil Afroza Begum, Prof Dr Md. Sazzad Hossain, Prof Dr Muhammed Alamgir Hossain and divisional heads of UGC were present at the meeting.
