Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam in a programme instructed the bus drivers strictly to abide by the traffic signals.

In the programme, he also gave lesson to the pedestrians how to cross roads using technologically advanced ‘push button time countdown signal’.

DNCC mayor gave his instructions at an awareness campaign on road crossing at Mohammadpur in the capital on Monday.   It may be mentioned that, DNCC recently installed the ‘push button time countdown signal’ system on a pilot basis in two areas of  the city; one is in front of St Francis Xavier's Green Herald International School in Mohammadpur and another is in front of Brac University in Mohakhali.

The mayor, in the programme, also distributed leaflets among the residents of Mohammadpur on road crossing.

Chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai Ilias Kanchan, also an actor, was present in the programme.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said, “We don’t violate traffic rules in cantonment area due to fear of harsh punishment and fine, but the same drivers violate laws when they drive outside the area. This should not continue. Traffic laws are enforced strictly all over the world.”

In his speech, Ilias Kanchan said, “If we want to ensure better traffic management system, we need to receive institutional education.”

Police alone cannot bring discipline in transport sector, the responsibility lies with all, he added.

Ward Councillor Nazrul Islam Ratan, traffic policemen and officials of DNCC were present at the programme.
