20 tonnes illegally imported sand seized in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM: Officials of Chattogram Customs House seized 20 tonnes of sand brought under the declaration of ‘staple fibre’ from a container depot in the city on Tuesday.    

Sources said one ‘Syed Traders’ of Anjuman Complex in the city’s Jubilee Road imported the consignment in a container in the name of importing the fibre from China.  

C&F Agent ‘SGC Company’ of Agrabad area was assigned for taking delivery of the consignment.

  Chattogram Customs Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nur Uddin Milon said on information, they seized the container at QNS Container Depot in the city’s EPZ area on Tuesday.

He said primarily they were suspecting the incident as an attempt to money laundering.

It also may attempt to dodge revenue through bringing sand with false declaration, he said. “We will send the sample for testing in laboratory,” added the DC.

Mentionable, the Customs officials also unearthed an incident of bringing sand under the declaration of importing thread through the Chattogram port on October 9.
