Jatiya Party (JP) chairman GM Quader on Monday said dialogue between ruling Awami League (AL) and opposition JP is continuing to settle the issue of candidacy in the upcoming Rangpur-3 by election.

“Discussion is going on for understanding about the by polls, but no decision is yet to be taken in this regard,” said GM Quader at a press briefing at the party’s Banani office in the capital.

He said the party has nominated Rahgir Al-Mahe Ershad alias Shad Ershad to contest the by election on the basis of consensus of the party leaders.

The seat fell vacant with the death of Ershad on July 14, which also widened the rift between his brother GM Quader and widow Raushon Ershad over who will be his political heir.

Jatiya Party founder HM Ershad won the seat in the December 30 general elections last year as the candidate of the Awami League-led alliance.

But, the ruling party is not giving up the seat this time with the official opposition in parliament in turmoil over who will be Ershad’s successor.
