Two ‘criminals’ killed in ‘gunfights’

Two alleged criminals were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ in Chattogram and Satkhira early on Thursday.

In Chattogram, an alleged criminal was killed in the gunfight with police after surrender in the city’s Jalalabad area.

 The deceased was identified as Md Belal, 43, son of Abdul Quader of Chandina upazila in Cumilla district.

 Officer in-Charge (OC) Pranab Chowdhury of Khulshi police station said Belal surrendered to the police station around 1:00pm on Wednesday.

 Acting on his statement, at team of police carried out a drive taking him in the hilly Jalalabad area.

 Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the accomplices of Belal attempted to take him away.

 At one stage, the criminals opened fire prompting police to retaliate that triggered the ‘gunfight’, he said.

 Later, they fled the scene leaving Belal. He was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him dead, said the OC. A light gun, three rounds of cartridge and three sharp weapons were recovered from the spot after the ‘gunfight’, he said.

Belal was accused of 13 cases filed on different charges including for murder and extortion, added the OC.

In Satkhira, a murder accused has been killed in a ‘gunfight’ between two groups of criminals in the Sadar upazila early on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Kabirul Islam, 45, of Kuchpukur village in the upazila.

He was an accused in five murder cases, said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station.

Of the cases, one was filed for killing local Awami League leader Nazrul Islam, who was shot dead on July 22, the OC said.
