Five people, including two Rohingya ‘drug dealers,’ were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with law enforcers in Cox’s Bazar and Chandpai range of Sundarbans on Monday.

In Cox’s Bazar, two Rohingya ‘drug dealers’ were killed in a ‘gunfight’ between ‘drug dealers’ and police in Leda camp area of Teknaf upazila around 2:00am.

The deceased were identified as Muhammad Alam, 35, of Nayapara Refugee Camp and Muhammad Rafiq, 20, of Jadimura Refugee Camp under the upazila.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf police station, said that Alam and Rafiq were detained by police from their respective camps on Sunday evening.

Based on their information, police along with Alam and Rafiq conducted a drive in the area. But, sensing their presence, the cohorts of Alam and Rafiq fired gunshots targeting police personnel forcing the law enforcers to retaliate.

However, the gang managed to flee after 40 gun shots fired by police.

Later, police found Rafiq and Alam lying with bullet wounds and took them to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared them dead, according to the OC.

Two police officials were also injured during the ‘gunfight’, the OC informed.

Police also recovered 2,200 Yaba tablets, two locally made guns, seven bullets and Tk 6.56 lakh in cash from the spot. In Sundarbans, three ‘robbers’ were killed in another ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Chandpai range of  Sundarbans.

But, the identities of the deceased could not be known immediately after the incident.

Major Md Shamim Sarder, the company commander of RAB-6 said, “The gunfight took place in Khonta Kodail canal area of the Pashur River leaving the trio and a RAB personnel injured.”

Tipped-off, RAB members conducted the raid in the area when the criminals tried to flee by spraying bullets on RAB members. “The elite force retaliated with gunshots,” he said.

“As the gunshots subsided, the trio was found lying on the spot. They were declared dead when taken to Mongla Upazila Health Complex,” the RAB official said.

A pipe gun, a shooter gun and four locally-manufactured weapons were recovered from the spot.
