A female Alim examinee was set on fire by miscreants at examination centre at Sonagazi upazila in Feni on Saturday.

The victim, Nusrat Jahan Rafi,18, who sustained 80 percent burn injuries, is now undergoing treatment at the burnt unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Victim’s brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman, who dropped her at Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrassa gate, said that his sister was attacked for filing a case against the madrassa principal, Siraj ud-Daulah, who tried to sexually harass her at his office room on March 27.

“The principal is now in jail following filing of the case with Sonagazi police,” he said.

After the incident, some students held demonstrations demanding punishment to the principal, while some others held demonstrations for his release.

Quoting his sister, Noman said that some pro-principal students called Rafi to the rooftop of the madrassa building where they told her to withdraw the case against the principal.

“At one stage, three students held her hands while another one poured kerosene on her and set her on fire before fleeing the spot,” he said.

Hearing her cry, other students and teachers rushed to the spot and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex where doctors referred her to DMCH for better treatment.

Abu Taher, the residential medical officer of the hospital, said the victim sustained 80 percent burn injuries.

Nurul Amin, the upazila secondary education officer, informed that he was staying inside the madrassa during the incident.

Sonagazi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sohel Parvez, Sonagazi Circle ASP Saikul Ahmed Bhuyian and Sonagazi police station OC Moazzem Hoosain visited the spot.

“We are investigating the matter giving it utmost importance,” he said.

“All of them, who are directly or indirectly involved in the incident, will be brought to book,” he added.
