A writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking a ban on fireworks on the rooftops and releasing lanterns in the sky during the 31st night celebration.

Ashrafuzzaman, a lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, filed the writ with the relevant section of the High Court on Monday.

The petitioner made the home secretary, inspector general of police, and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner respondents.

Advocate Ashrafuzzaman, in his writ, sought to impose a ban on playing loudspeakers, lighting fireworks on the rooftops, and releasing lanterns from 11pm on 31 December to 1am on 1 January.

He also demanded a ban on gathering in any open space and parking from 10pm on that night apart from buying and selling firecrackers.

The petitioner also prayed for conducting operations against such activities through mobile courts.
