Ailing Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has started speaking after a successful bypass surgery.

“Following a successful bypass surgery on Wednesday, he (Quader) started speaking to the doctor,” said BSMMU Director Prof Abu Naser Rizvi, who is accompanying Quader at the hospital, according to a press release of the road transport and bridges ministry on Saturday.

Ailing Quader, who is undergoing treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, spoke to a doctor as his endotracheal tube (artificial ventilation) has been removed.

“Quader’s endotracheal tube has been removed as his sleeping pills are also being reduced gradually,” Rizvi said, adding, “After removing the tube, he (Quader) spoke with me.”

Earlier on Friday, the IBP machine was removed from Quader’s body and the doctors decided to shift him to a cabin within this week.

Dr Sivathasan Cumaraswamy, cardiothoracic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital and senior teammate of the medical board formed for Quader’s treatment, conducted the surgery.

Earlier, doctors of the medical board briefed family members about the physical improvement of Quader after the surgery.

Quader’s wife Isratunnesa Quader, his younger brother Abdul Quader Mirza and other members of Quader’s family are in Singapore with the ailing minister.

Earlier on March 3, Quader was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) after breathing complications and diagnosed with three blocks in the heart.

Later on March 4, Quader was flown to Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.
