CHATTOGRAM: Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said victory of the candidates, who raised question regarding the election of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), has proved that the election was fair.
He said this while addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of an insurance fair on Gymnasium premises of MA Aziz Stadium in the city on Friday.Minister Hasan said it has been proved that the overall election was fair as those, who raised question about transparency of the poll, were elected and secured many votes compared to other candidates.
Terming the just concluded DUCSU poll held after 28 years as positive sign, he urged the elected candidates to accept the result of the election showing respects to the decision of general students.
He, however, acknowledged that some mistakes were made at some halls during the voting.
The Dhaka University (DU) authority carried out investigation and took steps immediately against the allegations of irregularity, said Hasan Mahmud, also publicity secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL). Criticising the positions of left and right leaning student organisations, he said they could not defeat Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in the poll despite forging alliance.
The information minister alleged that the BNP and Jatiya Oikya Front (JOF) have been trying to fish in troubled water over the DUCSU poll.
He said though the BNP gave a pause on destructive politics, they are yet to come back from the path of subversive activities.Regarding the insurance, he said the contribution of insurance sector to the GDP of the country is only 0.67 per cent while it is around four per cent in India.
Highlighting different initiatives taken by the government for welfare of the country, he observed that the insurance sector will have to be reorganised to turn the country into a ‘social welfare state’.
Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) Chairman Md Shafiqur Rahman Patwary, Jiban Biman Corporation Chairman Selima Afroz, Financial Institution Division Secretary Md Asadul Islam, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Abdul Mannan and IDRA Member Gokul Chad Das were present at the programme among others.
