CHANDPUR: A mobile court here on Tuesday sentenced nine fishermen to one year jail each for netting ‘jatka’ (hilsha less than 10 inches long) defying government ban in the Meghna River, reports UNB.

The mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Md Uzzal Hossain handed down the verdict after they were produced before it on Tuesday afternoon.

A team of river police arrested them while they were catching ‘jatka’ at Alur Bazar in Sadar upazila and seized 6,000 metres ‘current jal’ early Tuesday, said Shahidul Islam, in-charge of Alur Bazar Police Outpost.

Later, the seized nets were burned down following the order of the Executive Magistrate, he added.
