RMG workers block Dhaka-Aricha highway over death rumour

Garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway for three hours on Monday following rumours of a co-worker’s death in a road accident.

The rumours were originated from an accident that took place in front of Bando ECO Apparels Ltd in Savar area of Aminbazar at around 8:00 am.

Witnesses said a City Corporation garbage truck crashed into a bus carrying the workers Bando ECO Apparels while taking a U-turn near Salepur Bridge of Aminbazar. There was a heated exchange between the workers and the truck driver after the incident.

At one stage of the altercation, a City Corporation employee hit Monowara, a female garment worker, leaving her injured. 

After hearing the news of the incident, workers came out of the factory and blocked the streets. When rumours of Monowara’s death spread, the workers became more agitated.

Commuter suffered as the vehicular movement of on both sides of the Dhaka-Aricha Highway was halted due to the blockade.

The workers also vandalised several vehicles, including a garbage vehicle of the City Corporation in the area.

Abdul Awal, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said “Monowara did not die. She is being treated at Shaheed Suhrwardy Medical Hospital.”

“But when the rumour of her death spread, the workers burst into protests,” he added. “We have dispersed the workers from the road and brought the situation under control,” the OC said.

Police managed to move away the workers from the highway at about 11:00 am.
