Myanmar is now seeking donations for Rohingyas though the country has long been blaming Bangladesh for making delays in their repatriation for global aid.
In order to raise donations from across the world, the Myanmar authorities have formed an agency named ‘Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development in Rakhine’.It is a public-private union enterprise with three main goals -- providing humanitarian assistance, carrying out resettlement and rehabilitation and working for development in Rakhine state.
State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi acts as chairperson and union minister for social welfare, relief and resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye as vice-chairman.
Dr Aung Tun Thet is its chief coordinator while U Kyaw Myaing and U Kyaw Myaing are information and communications directors of the enterprise.
This enterprise brings together the experience and expertise of the public and private sectors, according to the information posted to its official website.
It will be funded by public funds and ‘generous donations’ from UN agencies, friendly countries, international and regional financial institutions as well as by donors inside the country and those who are living abroad.
The Myanmar authorities has widely publicised the enterprise through posting the official link of its website to the websites of country’s different diplomatic missions abroad, including the official website of the Myanmar Embassy in New Delhi, India -- http://myanmedelhi.com.They have also posted an advertisement on the website of the mission asking for donation in resolving the Rakhine state issue.
The advertisement for donation requested prospective donors to deposit even a little into the accounts of Myanmar Economic Bank, KBZ Bank, CB Bank, and AYA Bank.
The website of the enterprise mentioned that those who wish to make a humanitarian donation in Rakhine state can donate a school for the benefit of the returnees or ethnic nationals who have been displaced from their original villages.
The official website of the enterprise has also published news of donations made to the agency with photographs.
Such a news story said the International Language and Business Center (ILBC) Co. Ltd and Care Well Medical Co. Ltd jointly donated a mobile medical clinic for the enterprise.
Union Minister for the Office of the Union Government U Thaung Tun, Union Ministers Dr Win Myat Aye and Dr Myint Htwe, Rakhine Chief Minister U Nyi Pu and Yangon Region Hluttaw Speaker U Tin Maung Tun, among others, attended the donation ceremony.
In their speech at the ceremony, speakers asked businesses to cooperate with the union enterprise for the sake of Rakhine State’s development.
Analysts and experts of Bangladesh are totally taken aback by Myanmar’s moves to raise donations for the Rohingyas from around the world through its diplomatic missions.
They branded the moves as manifestation of Myanmar’s self-contradiction and hypocrisy as the country is blaming Bangladesh for making delays in the repatriation for donations, though Myanmar itself is raising donations.
AKM Atiqur Rahman, former secretary of the foreign ministry, told the daily sun that Myanmar’s moves to raise donations have again exposed their hypocritical identity.
From the very beginning, the country has proven that they are nothing but a big liar and they have no respect to international community and humanity at all, he said.
The Myanmar authorities have been doing everything to hide their heinous crimes against humanity and create barriers to the repatriation of the Rohingyas to their homes, he noted.
However, it is very fortunate that the international community could know their real face and ill-motive in this matter, he said.
