Awami League (AL) joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said the list of party’s candidates for the next general election is almost complete.

“It will be finally announced after the election schedule. Awami League is geared up for the next general elections,” he said.

Hanif was speaking at a programme on the second day of the five-day refreshers’ training course at Islamic Foundation with its Director General Shamim Mohammad Afjal in the chair on Sunday.

Hanif said, “Our party chief is collecting data from the grassroots and aspirants will be picked on the basis of the grassroots opinion.”

He said it is up to the BNP whether they will participate in the parliamentary election.

About the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail, he said there is no scope to free a convicted person.

The only way is to seek presidential clemency or she (Khaleda) will have to continue legal battle, he said.

Hanif said religion should not be used as a weapon to seize power.

“Our Prophet had never used the religion, Islam, to go to power. But Jamaat-e-Islami is using the name of Islam in carrying out their political activities,”

Hanif said that the country is moving forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Although BNP was in power from 2001 to 2006, they would not be able to show any instance that they did something for Islam, he said, adding “But Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the Islamic Foundation. He allotted a site for Kakrail mosque.”

Hanif also called upon ulemas to come forward and work for the welfare of the country.
