Fire service dept now well-equipped: Kamal

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Thursday said Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence is now capable of managing any big fire incident as it is now enriched with modern equipment.

“Earlier, we failed to extinguish fire in high-rise buildings like Tazrin Garments as we had no equipment for extinguish those fires. But now the scenario has changed,” he said.

The minister said this while inaugurating the International Fire Safety and Security Expo- 2018 organised by Electronics Safety and Security Association of Bangladesh (ESSAB) in association with Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital. 

Asaduzzaman said, “There were only 193 fire stations in the country before the Awami league-led government came to power in 2009. Now there are 335 fire stations across the country. The number will be 554 within a couple of months.” 

Appreciating the initiative of the Fire Safety and Security Expo, the minister said it will help potential users to know about the available safety and security products and services in the market.

Director General of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Brig General Ali Ahmed Khan said, “Though we have taken various initiatives for the safety and security in RMG sector, but we are still facing lots of challenges. Major challenges are delayed information about the fire, lack of water sources and adequate special equipment.”
