The Election Commission (EC) is forging ahead with critical electoral preparations and will implement reforms within its jurisdiction before the election without waiting for the Consensus Commission, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said.
"We will await the Consensus Commission's guidance on political matters, which are beyond our immediate purview. However, we are actively addressing all pre-election tasks within our mandate," he said while talking to reporters after a meeting with Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Susan Ryle at his office in the capital.
Emphasising the seriousness of these efforts, the CEC said, "We regard voter registration as a major task. We have almost completed it. The tender process for procurement is ongoing. The boundary delimitation proposal has been sent for legal amendment. We have extended the registration deadline for political parties by two months. We are working to amend the Code of Conduct. We are also developing guidelines for observers."
He said the Australian high commissioner enquired about their preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections. "I have provided detailed information on our preparations," he said, adding that she also wanted to know about the specific reform measures they are undertaking.
Noting that Australia has offered necessary assistance, Nasir Uddin said, "I told her that UNDP is already supporting us. After observing that, if you wish to get involved in any area, you are welcomed to do so."
Regarding the progress of election preparations, he said the voter list is being updated, procurements are underway and legal reforms are advancing. "We have taken the initiative to complete all necessary tasks."
Susan Ryle said they continue to support the EC's efforts for free and fair elections. “Bangladesh is going through a way towards open, free and fair elections stadia...We continue to work with you as a specific hand to support your efforts," she said, describing her meeting with the CEC as very productive.
