BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has asked his party’s leaders and activists to stand by the flood-affected people in the country’s northern region.
“I request all the leaders, activists and supporters of BNP and its front and associate organisations in the flood-affected and surrounding districts to actively come forward with all possible assistance for the flood victims,” he said in a written statement on Monday.
The BNP acting chairman also called upon the interim government to urgently take effective measures to prevent river erosion and carry out relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas.
He mentioned that over 1 lakh people have been marooned due to flash floods in the northern region with the victims living in extreme misery. “Uneasiness and fear prevail among the people in the affected areas as roads and crops have been inundated by water.”
Tarique Rahman said due to incessant heavy rains and the water flowing from upstream, vast low-lying areas in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, and Gaibandha districts along the Teesta River have been inundated suddenly.
