Gono Odhikar Parishad has criticised the recent statement of the Bangladesh Police Service Association (BSPA) to ‘maintain caution’ before running news on law enforcement agencies.

Police’s intervention in media reports is an attempt to protect dishonest officials, according to a statement issued on Sunday jointly signed by Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur and General Secretary Rashed Khan.

BSPA, in a circular on Friday, requested more caution and proper adherence to journalistic principles in publishing any report about the police force in the future.

The platform of police claimed that ‘partial and purposeful’ reports are being published on former and current members of Bangladesh Police in traditional and social media.

Gono Odhikar Parishad tarnished the BSPA notes mentioning that the statement is given on behalf of the corrupt, dishonest and abusive officers of the police.

“They (police association) didn’t demand proper investigation and trial of policemen involved in various misdeeds including corruption, abuse of power and ownership of illegal property. On the contrary, the media, including the media, who are vocal about the corruption and misuse of power by the policemen,” read the party statement.

Police Service Association as an employee of the Republic can’t do such activities ‘against the constitution and morality’.

“Police have a positive role in the public service of the country. The corruption and misdeeds of a few senior police officers cannot be blamed on the entire force. But the statement by the Police Service Association is in favour of dishonest, corrupt policemen,” added the Gono Odhikar statement.
