17,000mts waste generated from 12 city corporations per day: LGRD Minister

LGRD Minister Tazul Islam on Sunday said around 17,000 metric tonnes of waste are generated from the country’s 12 city corporations every day and the government has taken various measures for recycling wastes.

In reply to a query from ruling Awami League MP elected from Noakhali-2 Morshed Alam at parliament, the minister said scrutiny of different proposals is going on to produce power from waste in the city corporations, except Barishal and Rajshahi city corporations,.

Tazul Islam said the amount of waste generated from Dhaka South City Corporation is 3213 MT, Dhaka North City Corporation 3400-3600 MT, Chattogram City Corporation 2135 MT, Sylhet City Corporation 375 MT, Barishal City Corporation 500 MT, Khulna City Corporation 1000 MT, Rajshahi City Corporation 350 MT, Rangpur City Corporation 120 MT, Narayanganj City Corporation 1000 MT, Cumilla City Corporation 210 MT, Gazipur City Corporation 4,000 MT and Mymensingh City Corporation 500 MT.

Around 39 percent of the total waste come from the two city corporations of Dhaka city, the minister said.

Tazul said that Local Government Department has taken initiative to produce power from the waste of Dhaka North City Corporation.

“A project was taken to build incineration plant for producing power from the waste of Amin Bazar landfill through WtE Power Plant North Dhaka Private Ltd and Bangladesh Power Development Board with financing from China Machinery Engineering Corporation,” he said.

Besides, the minister said, scrutiny of six proposals is going on to produce power from the waste of Dhaka North City Corporation.

Thirteen proposals were sent to the Power Division for producing power from the waste of Chattogram City Corporation, said the said.

“The technical committee of Bangladesh Power Development Board has selected proposals of four companies. Work is going on to implement the project,” he said.

Besides, the minister also said an incineration plant was set up at the Chattogram City Corporation area to produce power from medical waste of this city corporation.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with ‘Waste Concern’ to set up medical incineration at Narayanganj City Corporation, he added.
