3 DU students expelled for sexual abuse

The Dhaka University (DU) authority has temporarily expelled three students for their alleged involvement in sexually harassing a female student.


The expelled students are – applied mathematics department’s Ratul Hasan Nayeem, zoology department’s Amirul Islam and statistics department’s Nazmul Sakib. they all are affiliated with Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).


All of them are first-year students and attached to Amar Ekushey Hall. They are tied to the ruling Awami League student wing’s hall unit.


The DU’s acting Proctor Amzad Ali said that their expulsion has been ordered on Thursday.


The trio were caught by the patrol team of the university's proctorial body on Tuesday midnight when they were harassing the girl at the TSC premises. Later they were handed over to to Shahbagh police station.


Amzad Ali on Thursday said the authorities also show-caused the girl and her friend, population science’s first-year student Rakib Iqbal who was with her at the time.


They are to explain their presence at the TSC late into the night without permission from authorities.


A two-member committee would look into the matter and there was the possibility of stern actions being taken based on their findings, he added.
