The devastating fire that broke out at Mohammadpur Krishi Market in the capital early in the morning may be originated from a shop at grocery Patti of the market.

Fire service and Civil Defence Director Lt Col Tajul Islam made the observation while talking to reporters on the spot at 9:40am on Thursday.

Mentioning that no casualty was reported till now, he said most of the shops in the market were gutted in the fire.

Some 150 firefighters of 17 units with the help of police, RAB, BGB, Army, Navy, Air Force and local people could bring the fire under control at 9:25am, he said.

He also added that firefighters are working to douse the fire completely and it will take time.

While talking about the reason of the fire, the director said that they could not confirm it immediately.

The officer said the market was declared risky long ago and several notices were sent to the market authorities but they paid no heed to it.

Scarcity of water and huge crowds led to delay in bringing the flames under control, he said.

He also said that the fire originated around 3.43am and informed it around 3:45am.
