Traffic jam, illegal parking and muggers all around

Auto-immobile! It is a common sight in Farmgate area during peak hours. The pace of life is slowed down by long tailbacks. The photo was shot on Thursday.

Farmgate area of the capital is the most affected with the problems of traffic jam and illegal car parking. The footpaths are grabbed by a vested quarter, leaving no space for the pedestrians. The footbridge, which was constructed for pedestrians to cross the VIP road, is now lying unused for lack of VIP road, work.

The damaged roads coupled with water crisis have intensified the public sufferings. There is no recreation centre in the area with the only park occupied by drug addicts. A project to beautify VIP road has been initiated. But the area from Farmgate to Green Road is not included under the project.

The residents of Farmgate area fall prey to the dope party and hijackers most frequently. The ward No. 27 of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) consists of East Rajabazar, West Rajabazar, Green Road, Indira Road, Monipuripara, Sher-e-Banglanagar and Parliament Complex areas. Faridur Rahman Khan Iran is the elected councilor of the ward. Nearly 100 days have elapsed since he assumed  the office. But no development activities are evident.

Faridur Rahman Khan Iran told this correspondent, “I have initiated development works in my area. As traffic jam has emerged as a curse for the whole country, I can little do about it.”

Speaking about the positive steps taken to solve public sufferings, the councillor said the drainage system near the Tejgaon College is being improved. To ensure uninterrupted water supply, the WASA pump at the Panthapath was repaired. The process of  evicting hawkers and removing billboards is underway. But the roads are becoming smaller as many buildings are being constructed  in violation of Building Code.
