A Dhaka court has observed that there is no alternative to building social resistance against drug menace.

Alongside the legal action, strict stand of the society is equally important to prevent drug addiction and peddling, the court said.

Judge Syed Arafat Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-4 on Monday made the observation while passing a judgment on a drug case.

“Drug is jeopardising the future of young generation of the country by its claws. Under the influence of yaba and heroin, the addicts commit various types of crime in the society. We do not expect it. So, social movement against drug is needed apart from punitive action,” the court said.

The court sentenced principal accused Saimun Azam Jony to life imprisonment and fined Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer six months more in prison.

Besides, the court awarded 10 years of imprisonment to co-accused Shahriar Emon and fined Tk 20,000, in default, to languish six months more in jail.

However, the court acquitted another accused Alamgir Hossain Shamim of the charge as allegation against him was not proved.

Assistant Bench Officer Belal Hossain confirmed the judgment.

According to the case dossier, the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) raided a house of Siddheswari in the capital on May 31,2007 and seized 2.500kg heroin and 1,485 yaba tablets. Jony and Emon were captured from the spot.

On August 26, 2007, the DNC submitted charge sheet against the three persons. The court indicted them on August 1,2010. Ten witnesses out of 14 testified in the court.
