Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque today called upon the law enforcement agencies to gear up drive against drug traffickers and peddlers to get the society rid of drug abuse.
He called for launching a social movement to create public awareness of the affects of drug addiction among the younger generation, who are the future leaders of the country, BSS reports.
He was addressing as the chief guest a function marking the second founding anniversary of a voluntary socio-cultural organisation "Green For Peace" held at Narayanganj Club Community hall this afternoon.
Presided over by Additional Inspector general of Police, who is also founder of "Green For Peace", Gazi Md. Mozammel Haque, the function was addressed, among others, by Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman Mia, Police Super Dr. Khander Muhid Uddin, President of "Green For Peace" Farzana Rahman and General Secretary Arif Mihir.
The IGP said Narcotics and Liquor Prevention Act:1991 was enacted to curb the growing menace of drug addiction with a provision of awarding death sentence.
He urged the members of "Green For Peace" to start campaign against drug trafficking being imbued with spirit of patriotism and the war of liberation.
Later, he distributed prizes among the winners of painting competition, dance and poetry recitation among the students of different educational institutions organised by "Green For Peace" to celebrate its founding anniversary.
A souvenir was also brought out on the occasion and it was distributed among the attending guests.
Earlier, the IGP visited Narayanganj District Police lines.
