No Meeting with Lu: BNP men upset

Opposition BNP men are now upset as no meeting of US Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu was held with the party leaders during his recent visit to Dhaka.

The party leaders and activists also expected that Donald Lu would mount pressure on the current Awami League government for holding the next polls under a caretaker government and would take a negative stance against the government, the party insiders said.

“It is the matter that what type of statement Donald Lu gives to his government after returning to the country from Bangladesh. After all, we can’t make any comment about his visit before knowing the statement,” BNP vice-chairman Mohammad Shahjahan told the Daily Sun.

He said it is established that there is no democracy in Bangla-desh during the current regime while the human rights are also being violated here regularly. “Most of the countries already know this situation.”

The BNP leader further said they hope that the countries, including the United States, will cooperate with the people of Bangladesh to ‘restore’ democracy and human rights in the country.

Talking to the Daily Sun, BNP media cell convener Jahiruddin Swapan said no meeting was held between the BNP leaders and US Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu during his visit to Bangladesh.

The party insiders said BNP leaders tried to get appointment of the US envoy to meet him but they did not get it. Even they did not get any chance to give any written statement.

BNP sources said its leaders and activists expected that Donald Lu would hold a meeting with the opposition parties and would listen to their views about the current government and current political situation of the country.

At the same time, they also expected that the US envoy would mount pressure on the government for ‘lack of democracy and violation of human rights’ in the country.

“Rather Donald Lu made comments about the government positively which has made our party men upset,” said a BNP central leader wishing not to be named.
