The government is likely to redefine the age of minors through amendment to law in a bid to bring juvenile offenders to justice.

As per the existing law, anybody below 18 years is minor. This provision is consistent with the international law.

If a minor commits any crime, he/she will enjoy immunity. Whatever crime a child commits, he/she is sent to just correction centre, not jail.

Recent incident of killing a college lecturer by a minor boy in Savar has prompted the government policymakers to amend the law.

After a meeting at the home ministry, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque told reporters that law and order committee decided to lower the minority age.

“We have decided to amend the law. Personally, I am in favour of fixing child age at 14 years. However, such massive change was not decided at the meeting.”
