Plot to Kill Bashundhara MD: Protests go on (Updated)

Protests continued in different parts of the country on Wednesday against the plot to assassinate Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

People from different strata of life joined human chains and protest rallies in different districts, including Narail, Manikganj and Rajbari, for the fifth day.

The participants in those programmes voiced concern over the assassination plot and demanded that the government find out the conspirators and mete out exemplary punishment to them.

Foiling an assassination attempt on the Bashundhara Group Managing Director, law enforcers arrested a youth, Saiful Islam Saad, 23, on November 5. He was later put on a three-day remand on November 7.

During preliminary interrogation, Saad disclosed that as part of a blueprint orchestrated by Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, also MP from Chattogram-12 constituency (Patiya), and his son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun, he was supposed to shoot the Bashundhara Group MD to death during Jumma prayers.

In Narail, a human chain was formed in protest against the plot to murder the Bashundhara Group Managing Director.

The protest programme was held in the Court area of the district around 10:30am.

Narail correspondent of the Kaler Kantho Saiful Islam Tuhin, Narail correspondent of the Bangladesh Pratidin and News24 Sajjad Hossain, journalists Sathi Talukder and Ashok Kundu, among others, spoke at the programme.

The speakers demanded immediate arrest and speedy trial of Whip Shamsul and his son Sharun for their heinous plot to kill the Bashundhara Group MD.

In Manikganj, a human chain was formed in protest against the assassination attempt on Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

The programme was organised by Baikunthapur Khagrata Ahmadiyya Dakhil Madrasah in Ghior upazila.

Locals and several hundred students of the madrasah took part in the human chain.

Speakers at the programme said Bashundhara Group MD Sayem Sobhan Anvir is providing free education for many poor but meritorious students of Manikganj.

He extends the hand of humanity whenever there is any disaster in the country, they said, adding that he distributed food items among and distressed and unemployed people during the coronavirus pandemic.

The speakers demanded arrest and speedy trial of Whip Shamsul and his son Sharun, who were the masterminds of the assassination attempt.

Superintendent of the madrasah Md Solaiman Hossain presided over the programme while Asadur Rahman Mithu, senior vice-president of Ghior upazila Jubo League, Amjad Hossain, director of the madrasa, and its assistant superintendent Mahidur Rahman, among others, spoke at the protest programme.

In Rajbari, a human chain along with a protest rally was held at Goalanda upazila condemning the heinous attempt to kill the Bashundhara Group MD.

The human chain was formed in front of Goalanda Shaheed Smriti Club and Library of the district around 10:30am.

Kaler Kantho Goalanda upazila correspondent Ganesh Paul presided over the programme.

Among others, Kaler Kantho Shuvosangha's Goalanda upazila president Prof Amirul Islam Lintu, Goalanda Press Club president Rashedul Haque Raihan, general secretary Shafiqul Islam Shamim, Goalanda Banichakra Music School founder and headmaster Salauddin Dulal and Goalanda Bazar Traders’ Association leader Fakir Shafiquzzaman Pintu were also present.

The speakers demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the masterminds and instigators of the assassination attempt on Sayem Sobhan Anvir.
