Navy swimmers Mariam Akter, Juthi Akter and Kajol Mia made three national records in their respective events on the first day of Bangabandhu 30th National Swimming, Diving and Water polo Competition at the Syed Nazrul Islam National Swimming Complex in the capital on Friday.
Mariam made a new national record of 1:19 min in the women’s 100m breaststroke. She broke Army swimmer Rumana Akter’s record of 1:19.53 min which was made in 2016.
Kajol broke his own previous record of 2:13.49 min in the men’s 200m medley which was made in the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Games last April. The swimmer made a new record of 2:12.05 min.
A total of 12 events were held on the first day. Country’s prominent swimmers -- Sonia Khatun earned two golds, one silver; Sonia Akter Tumpa one gold, one silver in the women’s category while Kajol Mia two golds; Jewel Ahmed one gold, one silver; Asif Reza one gold and Mahfizur Rahman two silvers in the men’s category.
Navy became the top in the medal table with 10 golds, 8 silvers and 2 bronze medals while Army second with 2 golds, 8 silvers and 6 bronze medals and BKSP third with 4 bronze medals.
The ongoing edition of the national competition, which is named after the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been taking place after more than a 30-month break. The last edition was held in March 2019.
