A criminal gang committed robberies in eight running buses within 48 kilometers of the Dhaka-Rangpur highway-- from Palashbari in Gaibandha to Pirganj in Rangpur-- in the last nine months, killing a driver and robbing cash and valuables of the buses’ passengers.
Rapid Action Battalion-1 arrested the ringleader and five members of the circle in Ashulia in Dhaka and Gaibandha on Saturday, said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director (legal and Media Wing) of RAB Headquarters in the capital on Sunday.
The gang has 10 to 12 members, said the RAB director. “They have been committing robberies in the north region bound buses for a long time. They in the guise of passengers got on the buses from Savar and Ashulia and committed the crimes within 48 kilometers from Palashbari in Gaibandha to Pirganj in Rangpur,” he said.
“They committed robberies in seven to eight buses within the areas since December, last year,” he said. They robbed cash and valuables of the passengers of Ratna Special on December 18, last year while they committed robberies in Sothibari Special on January 1, Saikat Paribahan on January 12, Shyamoli Paribahan on March 8, Jaida Paribahan on April 4 and Dipjol Paribahan on August 19.
At last, they committed robbery at Hanif Paribahan early on September 1 after killing its driver Manjur Hossain, 55.
On the crimes in Hanif Paribahan, the officer said that the bus loaded with passengers left Dhaka for Panchagar on the night of August 31. It came under the criminal attack after it reached Pirganj in the wee hours. Poimul Islam, helper of the bus, filed a case with Pirganj Police Station on that day.
Al Moin depicted that the bus reached at Savar at about 8:20pm; then Lalu, Abu Sayed and another got into the bus as passengers. When it reached Nabinagar, three others--Nayan, Omar Faruque and Firoj--got on the bus.
After that, Lalu drove the bus and other members of the gang robbed cash and valuables of the passengers.
They left the bus in front of Chanpaganj High School at Pirganj at about 3:00am and went away. The injured Manjur was rushed to Palashbari Upazila Health Complex where the doctors on duty declared him dead.
The RAB officer said that they were trying to arrest other members of the criminal racket.
