A Saudi expatriate was arrested for trying to smuggle 4.3 kilograms of gold through the Hajarat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka upon his arrival from Saudi Arabia on Monday.

The detainee is Mohiuddin, a Bangladeshi living in Saudi Arabia, hailed from Cumilla, customs officials said.

Customs officials at the airport said Mohiuddin arrived at the HSIA from Riyadh by Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG 4040 at around 15:11pm. As they had information, the preventive team of Dhaka Customs House took position at different places of the airport.

When Mohiuddin came to the airport, the preventive team members of Dhaka Customs House intercepted him at the boarding bridge.

Later, in the presence of various agencies on the Green Channel, 37 gold bars wrapped with scotch tape were recovered from inside a black handbag from the detained passenger. The gold is worth around Tk 3 crore.

Detainee said that Zakir Hossain, an expatriate from Cumilla Sadar, handed over the gold bars to him at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. He said that after arriving in HSIA, someone would call outside the airport and receive the gold bars.

A case was filed with Airport Police Station in this regard.
