The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today summoned High Court lawyer Barrister Md Ashraful
Islam Ashraf over his 'contemptuous' Facebook post regarding Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain.
An Appellate Division full bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order as Attorney General AM Amin Uddin brought the post to court's attention."The Facebook statement is highly contemptuous. He made a direct attack on the chief justice and Supreme Court through this statement," Justice Muhammad Imman Ali said during the order.
"Barrister Md Ashraful Islam Ashraf made the post yesterday, criticizing the chief justice and seeking his resignation. Some of my lawyer colleagues brought this to my attention and I brought that to the court's attention today. The court has summoned him to appear before it physically at 9.30 am on August 8 and give an explanation as to why contempt of court proceedings shall not be drawn against him," the attorney general said.
The court also ordered the lawyer to refrain from practicing in any court in the meantime and asked BTRC to block his Facebook account.
